World Environment Day
The ozone layer over Antarctica is fading. The ice in the Arctic is shrinking. India faced its warmest February in 2023 since 1901. The Amazon rainforest is emitting more CO2 than Oxygen, extreme heat has killed over 61000 Europeans during the summer of 2022. The Himalayas could lose up to ⅔ of the glaciers by 2100, etc. We could go on and on about the globally alarming events related to the environment and run out of the word limit before accommodating every issue. But why are we even discussing this on the website of a carpet brand? Well, it’s World Environment Day. It is set to be celebrated on 5th June every year, to remind people about the interconnectedness of human well-being and their surroundings.

World Environment Day is a flagship event by the United Nations. It is our actions and our carelessness in taking the environment for granted that have led to its destruction. The first World Environment Day was celebrated in 1973, following the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm. Today, the world not only celebrates it but also understands the importance behind it. To contribute, all an individual/business has to do is make sustainable life choices. Each year, this day is celebrated with a theme, and this time, it's ‘Ending global plastic pollution’.
Obeetee Carpets has always been one to contribute to sustainability. In the market for more than a century now, Obeetee has seen times change. Since our establishment, we have been contributing to making the Earth a better place. We believe in the art of handmade. With no machines involved earlier, we ensured that our sourcing was 100% sustainable and environmentally friendly. With time, as we introduced technology into our production, we made sure that we gave back to the surroundings equally.
We have a 3-step waste management water system. The water that is used to dye our yarns is filtered and collected to wash our rugs. Post washing, the water further goes through a filtration process, eventually watering the neighbouring villages. To reduce carbon emissions, a significant percentage(30%) of our electricity needs are generated using solar power. This equates to approximately 1807790 lbs of CO2 emissions and a saving of approximately 37,666 trees per year. The solar panels mounted on the roofs of our facility assist us in reducing carbon emissions.
As mentioned earlier, this Environment Day theme is ‘Ending global plastic pollution’. We’d like to tell you about our plastic recycling initiatives. We recycle plastic bottles to make PET yarns. These yarns are durable and resilient to changes in weather. On average, we use 5,40,000 bottles to produce 6000 kg of PET yarn per month. At our dye plant, we use locally sourced rice husks instead of coal to generate steam. This has reduced our carbon footprint by approximately 74,000 trees per year.
Sustainability has always been one of our major concerns, and we believe that it should be everyone’s. Yes, as compared to the past, the current scale of development is 1000 times faster, but it is also affecting the well-being of our environment. Instead of following the mindset that how would just one step make a difference, all of us should believe in the ideology that every drop forms the ocean. The current population of Earth is 8,231,613,070. If everyone takes just one step forward, it will be 8,231,613,070 steps towards a sustainable future.
