What Not to Do With a Hand-Tufted Rug

Unlike hand-knotted rugs, these have thick piles and come with a latex backing. Hand-tufted rugs are made using a tufting gun. Though these are handmade, the gun makes it comparatively easier to weave as compared to knotted carpets. The process of maintenance is slightly tough. 1.       Machine Wash- Unlike dhurries, machine-made rugs, and hand-knotted carpets, hand-tufted rugs are not machine washable. Knotted rugs have a thin pile and thus cannot retain water for long. The gaps between the knots let the water slip away, drying out the rug faster. Tufted rugs come with a latex backing. While this backing makes the rug durable, it is still the rug. Intensive pressure of the washing machine may reduce the adhesive holding the tufted rug and the latex together, leading to the tearing of your rug. This same backing makes the rug difficult to fold, making it even more complicated to put the rug in the regular washing machine.

2.       Rough vacuum- You can vacuum a hand-tufted rug only with a certain pressure of suction. Too much air pressure may lead to the removal of the yarns, making the rug canvas uneven. While some fibers may come out as well, it may also lead to split ends on individual yarns, shedding onto your carpet more.

3.         Keep pets away- as much as your pet likes the plush pile of your tufted rug, it is better to keep them away from it. The knots of a hand-knotted rug might open when you pet the carpet pile, but in the case of a tufted rug, the fibers fall out of place, making a hole in the carpet canvas.
