Weaving a Greener Tomorrow: Obeetee and the Spirit of Earth Day
Every year on April 22nd, the world comes together to honour the planet we call home. Earth Day is not just a date on the calendar- it’s a global reminder to tread lightly, think consciously, and act responsibly. It’s a call to preserve the soil beneath our feet, the air we breathe, the rivers that nourish us, and the delicate ecosystems that hold this living, breathing world in balance.
At Obeetee, Earth Day isn’t just a one-day observance. It is woven into the very fabric of who we are.

From the rich soils of Mirzapur where our looms hum with the rhythms of ancient craftsmanship, to the skilled hands of over 25,000 artisans who carry forward a 100-year-old legacy- our journey has always been intertwined with the earth. Our carpets are made with natural materials, dyed using traditional techniques, and created with the kind of patience only nature understands. But as we look toward the future, the question we constantly ask ourselves is: how do we give back to the very planet that inspires us?
The Looms
The answer begins under the very rooftops where our looms reside. In recent years, Obeetee has taken bold steps towards sustainability by integrating solar energy into our production processes. Our weaving centres in Uttar Pradesh are increasingly powered by the sun- a clean, renewable source that reduces our dependence on fossil fuels and significantly lowers our carbon footprint.
The transformation hasn’t been superficial. From planning and infrastructure to energy storage and consumption patterns, this shift to solar power has been intentional and deep-rooted. Today, many of our looms operate with the sun’s energy coursing through them- making every carpet we produce not just a piece of art, but a quiet act of environmental responsibility.
Reducing Our Carbon Footprint
Sustainability, to us, is not an afterthought- it is a foundational value. And that means holding ourselves accountable for every stage of production. We’ve implemented rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, and eco-conscious dyeing techniques in our facilities. These efforts ensure that while we draw inspiration from nature’s colours and textures, we don’t pollute the very sources we revere.
Our carbon footprint reduction strategy is multifaceted. We audit our emissions, use sustainable raw materials wherever possible, and focus on slow, mindful production. Each of our carpets is hand-knotted or hand-tufted—methods that use minimal machinery, unlike fast-manufactured textiles that rely on energy-intensive processes.
But perhaps the most beautiful part of our sustainability story lies in the fact that we are not only preserving the planet—we are preserving people.
Sustainability is Also Human
At the heart of Obeetee are our artisans—the custodians of a craft that has stood the test of time. By continuing to support hand-weaving and rural employment, we ensure that traditional skills are passed down through generations. In an age of mass production, our carpets stand as quiet resistances—proof that luxury can be mindful, and beauty can be ethical.
We invest in safe, hygienic, and equitable workspaces for our artisans. We provide education to their children, healthcare support to their families, and training that empowers them to be more than just weavers—they are artists, storytellers, and stewards of sustainability.
A Home for the Earth, Within Every Home
Every Obeetee carpet tells a story. It tells of the village where it was made, of the artisan who wove it, of the patterns borrowed from history, and of the natural fibres dyed in earthy hues. But beyond these stories lies a quieter narrative—one of intent.
When you bring an Obeetee carpet into your home, you’re not just choosing a design—you’re choosing a process. A process that respects the land, honours the artisan, and values tradition over trend.
And that’s what Earth Day is all about. It’s about making choices that ripple outward. Choices that might seem small—like selecting a sustainable product—but collectively create impact.
The Journey Ahead
We know our journey is far from over. The climate crisis is a call for deeper, broader action. As we look ahead, we’re committed to expanding our use of renewable energy, working with organic and recycled materials, and exploring circular design models that ensure nothing goes to waste.
We’re also building more community-based green initiatives, like tree planting in and around our production clusters, and educational programs that help our artisans become environmental ambassadors in their own right.
Because ultimately, we believe that the planet doesn’t need saving—it needs respect. And in the soft rhythm of weaving, the warmth of wool, and the quiet sunlight powering our looms, we hope to offer just that.
This Earth Day, and every day, we choose to walk gently—because the earth is not ours to own. It is ours to honour.
From all of us at Obeetee, here’s to weaving a greener, kinder world—one thread at a time.
