Things to know before you buy a hand-tufted rug from Obeetee

In the realm of rugs and carpets, various designs, themes, and constructions often confuse the customer. Everyone knows that a decent handmade carpet may take a toll on your pocket. That’s where we step in. In this blog, we will talk about a category of rugs that is not only budget-friendly but would be a valuable addition to your spaces. The cost of a rug mainly depends on its weave style. In the early 1300s, when rugs were just being discovered, hand-knotting was the only weaving technique. Call it the lack of resources or a hindrance of time, everything was somewhat affordable in the good old days. The art of handmade is preserved now. Earlier, it was common, but today, ever since the machines took over, anything that is made or done by hand has become more valuable.

As mentioned earlier in this blog, let’s get on to discuss the ‘category of rugs that is not only budget-friendly but would be a valuable addition to your spaces’. Yes, we are talking about Hand-tufted rugs.

The process-

Hand-tufting is a process done by a combination of manual labour and hand-operated machines/tools. The making, pile width, and the construction of a tufted rug are entirely different than a knotted one. Mainly crafted using wool, a tufted carpet is made on a stand, and the yarn is punched into a canvas using a tufting gun. The procedure is not as time-consuming a making a knotted carpet but does require a unique skill. Following this, the rug is taken off the frame and glued to an anti-skid backing to keep it intact. This provides the rug with a thick pile and enhanced durability.

Below are a few additional things that you should know before purchasing a hand-tufted rug.

1.       Design expert assistance- Everything in our hand-tufted catalog is mostly designed by our in-house design team. The team analyses the upcoming trends in the market, relates the same to the past, and designs the rugs accordingly. We also have a customization service where you will be assisted by our team of experts to design a rug specifically for your space. It can be a new design from scratch or any change in our existing rugs, as per your space.

2.       Color difference- While the color of the yarns would be the same, there can be a slight difference in colors due to the tufted constriction. However, the same can be altered by selecting a shade darker or avoiding regular washing of the rug.

3.       Maintenance and care- In terms of maintenance, a hand-tufted rug is your best friend. Unlike hand-knotted rugs, a tufted rug cannot retain dust and debris between the knots. A simple vacuum rug every 2 weeks would keep your rug as good as new. In case of spills or stains, you can gently dab the affected area with a damp cloth. If something major happens, it's better to seek a professional cleaning service.

4.       Latex backing (anti-skid)- The biggest identification of a hand-tufted rug from Obeeetee is the latex backing it comes with. Once the tufted rug is off the frame, it is glued to a latex backing. The not only keeps the fibers intact but also adds to the pile height and durability of the rug. An additional feature of this backing is that it comes with an anti-skid ability.

5.       Excess wool shed- Shedding is one of the major drawbacks of a tufted rug. Unlike hand-knotted rugs, the yarn is inserted in a frame, and not tied together. This leads to excessive shedding. But once the fiber is settled, your space will be free of shedding.
