How Obeetee's Eco-Friendly Carpets Can Help Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
With the increase in global warming, sustainability is no longer a generic notion but the need of the hour. In definition, ‘sustainability is a principle that aims to create and maintain conditions where humans and nature can coexist harmoniously, supporting current and future generations”. In layman's terms, sustainability means sensibly using the current natural resources and fossil fuels to ensure there are enough for future generations. Over the years, sustainability as a concept/movement has evolved. It was the year 1952 when it was 1st introduced. The silent notion came to the highlight when around 12000 people died and more than 100000 fell sick because of a coal burning activity in London. However, in the eyes of the WHO, sustainability was introduced as a development concept in 1972.
While the government kept on pursuing individuals to do their part in making the world sustainable, businesses and conglomerates were asked to keep an eye on their production and waste dumping activities. It is now, decades later that everyone is aware of the concept of sustainability and trying to make the world a better place. In this vast movement towards a sustainable future, we at Obeetee Carpets have been playing our part for the past century.
At our production house in Mirzapur, we use only sustainably sourced raw materials to craft our rugs like hand-spun wool, unwoven hand-spun linen, BCI cotton, organic cotton, recycled cotton, hemp, and jute. These renewable materials are biodegradable and have minimal impact on the environment compared to synthetic alternatives, thereby reducing our carbon footprint during processing.
Further, we have a fully-fledged waste-water management system. The wastewater is channeled into the system via a proper drainage system and then undergoes a 3-step processing. At the primary level, the water is cleaned using lime and alum. At the secondary level, the water is treated with bacteria to remove organic waste, and then it is filtered with sand and carbon filters. After being fit for irrigation at the tertiary level, the water is released in the fields in the surrounding area.
For our energy needs, we have installed solar panels. This helps us save up to 37,666 trees per year due to reduced CO2 emissions. We have also reduced our energy consumption significantly at our dye plant by replacing coal with rice husks to generate energy, saving an additional 74,000 trees per year. Furthermore, we use recycled plastic bottles (5,40,000 per month) to make the 6000 kg of PET yarn necessary for production. Our commitment to using renewable energy and recycled raw materials is a testament to our dedication to ensuring a greener future.
We at Obeetee ensure your participation toward a sustainable future too. Our sustainable production processes make sure that the final products are environmentally friendly. Handcrafted by experienced weavers, each of our carpets has natural fibers in their construction.
