Rug Runways: How Rugs are Stepping into the Fashion World
Fashion is all about expression. It's about letting out your emotions and describing how you feel through your dressing style, without speaking a single word. We all choose our outfits carefully because our appearance makes the 1st impression. Outfits of the right style that suit you, make you stylish from the outside but feel confident inside. As the world evolves, new trends keep popping up on our mobile screen, seeking inspiration, designers all across the try to incorporate them and keep coming up with a new collection of clothing.
Inspiration is in everything. From a mere stationery item to the huge Amazonian rain forest, anything can inspire you. Though these collections are in sync with modern trends, a few designers go old school and seek inspiration from the beautiful motifs adorning the handmade rugs. The fashion world is ever-evolving, trends come and go with the seasons. However, the delicate motifs from Persia, India, and other parts of the world, knotted with precision on the carpet canvas are trends that stand strong till today, passing the test of time. From being underfoot in our homes to adding elegance on the runways for these fashion shows.
Handmade rugs, whether antique, vintage, or modern, are gorgeous pieces of art that tell a story. Ask anyone with any interest in fashion and they will tell you the same thing about clothes, that fashion is an art form. Doesn’t it make sense to combine the two? Well, you’ll get the answer to this question from the unique shoe collection by Olivia Pudelko, the boho outfit collection by Natacha Ramsay-Levi from Chole’, Paco Rabanne rug fashion, and many other designers/designer houses.
- Designer Olivia Pudelko is a Polish graduate of the University of Westminster in London. She launched stunning limited edition shoes that are reminiscent of carpet, working under the name “Westernaffair”. She sought inspiration by browsing about the rugs and carpets people use in their homes in their day-to-day lives. Since her designs are made from real, recycled antique rugs and carpets, the shoes in the collection are sustainable and eco-friendly.
- Chloé New Age Boho Collection was nothing less than a wonder. The rich culture and the beautiful art of Morocco are the source of inspiration for many designers, fashion or otherwise. The creative director of the luxury fashion house chole’ was slightly different and instead of the boho lifestyle, her inspiration came from the beautiful motifs of the boho rugs. Though not many but a few Persian rug motifs popped up throughout the collection, in their runway show.
- Paco Rabanne’s Fall 2020 ready-to-wear collection was heavy and medieval-inspired and uniquely represented the inspiration from elegant and antique rugs. Reminiscent of the rugs that graced the palaces of kings and queens 17th century were made into designs to be worn and shown off as fashion pieces. These include all-over designs with motifs directly drawn from rugs, as well as pieces that almost look like an entire rug has been draped around the model.
While there are many more collections of the designs of handmade rugs, a few also embrace the floor of the fashion runways to enhance the aesthetics and elegance of the entire show. The catwalk carpet by Alexandra Kehayoglou. With the help of her team, she worked straight for 16 nights to craft a sudden order for the Belgian designer Dries Van Noten, showcasing a women’s wear collection. The rug came with a high, hairy, and uneven pile, most often imitating nature, blurring the lines between art and functional objects. Getting the limelight of the entire show, the rug was the most talked about during the entire evening. The rug was complimented even by the Argentinian carpet-making dynasty. A 144-square-meter carpet was inspired by the landscapes and cultures of Alexandra’s native country.
