Carpets around the World: exploring the diverse cultural Influences behind Obeetee's designs
Culture is a beautiful thing. It is the one thing that differentiates us all from one another, and also the thing that binds us all together. In its most bookish sense, culture is defined as norms that society has considered standard for the longest time. Of course, every few miles, these norms also keep on changing. For instance, the Asian culture is fairly different than the South Asian culture, yet there are a few similarities when it comes to family’s involvement in private matters, clothes, food, and way to approach things, and so on.
Culture goes beyond time, but other times, it evolves with time. The best example of this is how our interior décor preferences have changed over time. Several home décor trends are doing rounds currently in the industry. However, some cultural beliefs remain constant. Some of us firmly believe in following the rules of Vastu Shastra- a Hindu tradition that promotes harmony with nature, entailing a few do’s and don’t’s.
However, in the era of globalisation, cultures from all around the world have begun to travel. No instead of Vastu many people like to follow Feng shui, a Chinese practice that involves rearranging objects in a home to create balance and prosperity in a home.
Similarly, when it comes to design, culture can have a significant influence on that as well. At Obeetee, we know that our customers hail from all around the world, and we want to cater to each one of their design preferences. Let us discuss some of these inspirations.
- Persian rugs – If you’ve ever been an Obeetee rug owner or have visited our store or website, you know how much we adore and embrace Persian artistry. We are makers at heart, and Persia is one of the first regions to influence various other regions through its exceptional craftsmanship. Persian carpets, known for their extremely intricate patterns and opulent colours were the most sought-after rugs by influential kings and queens. Through the grand trunk road, these carpets would thus travel all around the world, inspiring artisans to create their versions and renditions of Persian design.
As manufacturers of handmade rugs, we had to give this style our own Obeetee twist, and we did. You can find them all here.https://www.obeetee.in/collections/traditional-living?page=2

- Phulkari-Inspired Rugs
Phulkari, a traditional Punjabi embroidery technique, was a key inspiration in a unique collaboration with Abraham and Thakore for the collection A Stitch in Time. This collection, reflecting the linear patterns and rich textures of Phulkari, this creation was a special one that celebrated this traditional craft. While Phulkari designs are not a regular feature in our collections, this collaboration produced a culturally significant line that merges traditional embroidery with contemporary rug design.
