Carpet Maintenance 101: Tips from Obeetee's Experts

As we bid goodbye to the festivities of the season and the endless stream of footsteps flooding into your living spaces start to dwindle, you may be looking to restore the energy of your living spaces. Whether it is a decor reset or a deep clean, new beginnings are best marked with a fresh start in a renewed space. Floor furnishing often falls victim to the frenzy of high social activity, and can be neglected unless you’re doing an occasional deep clean. Our team at Obeetee believes that your carpet is a living, breathing part of your home, and with a little bit of attention every now and then, you can keep the spark alive.

Carpet Maintenance 101

Today, we’re delighted to share our expertise in handmade carpets with you, taking you through our top tips to maintain the quality, cleanliness, and longevity of your carpets. Coupled with our exquisite designs, these tips will empower you to carry our carpets through every season of your life.

You may already be aware of some of our suggestions, but we hope at least one of our tips surprises you. Here are Obeetee’s top 5 tips for maintaining your handmade carpet.

Set some ground-rules

Okay, we admit this one isn’t as much of a tip as it is an implementation of a carpet-first lifestyle, but we promise these rules make all the difference. To start with, we recommend a no shoe rule around your carpets. We understand this rule can be hard to implement, but we want to ensure that the exposure to shoe-grime from the outdoors is limited. If you’re not ready to switch to a no-shoes-indoor life, then we recommend at least ensuring that guests clean their shoes at a doormat before entering your home.

Our second suggestion is a crucial rule for the survival of your carpet - act fast on stains and spills! Accidents happen, and carpets are often at the scene of the crime when it comes to dropped food and spilled drinks. The key is to be prepared to pick up crumbs and blot stains before they embed themselves in the absorbent fibres of your carpet. We recommend keeping paper towels and a spray bottle with diluted, mild detergent handy. In the event of an accident, make sure to blot the stain, and then dab with the detergent mixed with warm water. Do not rub the stain as this will risk loosening the hand-knotted fibres of the carpet.

Vacuum regularly

Carpets are dirt magnets - the super absorbent natural fibres attract and trap all kinds of dust and debris from daily living. Weekly vacuuming is the best way to stay on top of the natural build-up, and will make maintenance easy in the long-term. Coupled with the ground-rules laid out above, these steps are guaranteed to keep your carpets looking clean and happy.

Protect your carpet

An industry holy grail, the invisible carpet protector will change how much you worry about your floor furnishing during periods of high footfall. All it is a two-sided plastic sheet, with one side that appears clear to semi-clear, and another that has adhesive. Once you find the right carpet protector to fit your carpet’s dimensions, you just need to unroll the sheet and stick the adhesive side of the protector onto the carpet. The non-adhesive side will appear transparent, protecting your carpet from exposure to shoes and spills. This is a good investment for a busy space, and it will reduce the need for frequent vacuuming and stringent ground-rules for your home, but beware - the protector does need monthly replacement.

Try a New Perspective - Rotate Your Carpet

This might seem like an unusual strategy, but it is worth employing. Frequently rotating your carpet can help prevent imprints from heavy furniture from becoming permanent dents in the soft fibres of your handwoven carpet. Moving your carpet frequently also allows you to get to the floor underneath and clean the surface periodically, creating a clean home for your carpet.

Occassional Professional Cleaning

Our final tip is the best strategy for long-term maintenance. Over time, the build up of dust, dirt, and debris is inevitable, especially within the soft fibres of a hand-knotted carpet. We recommend that you engage the services of professional carpet cleaners at least every 12-18 months, as they are equipped to deep clean the carpet to get the build-up out without damaging the weave or dye of the fabric.

We hope our guide has given you a new point-of-view on the care and maintenance that handmade carpets deserve. If you’re interested in seeing how you can add a carpet to your home, you can check out or collection online at obeetee.in or in-store at our flagship locations pan-India.
