The Design Trilogy

The Design Trilogy (Traditional, Transitional & Contemporary Design)

Ever since the concept of design has been known to the world, these 3 design styles have existed. Yes, many sub-categories have developed over time, but everything is based on the design trilogy. Traditional, Contemporary, and Transitional. However, they were discovered one after another, all spread across, just like the different ages of time. Before we get into the details, let’s talk about design in general. What is design? Technically, it is the intentional process of creating something according to the requirements, while maintaining the color, shape, style, and purpose of the item. But it goes beyond that. Design is a language, an emotion, and an identity. How customers feel is directly linked to what they see. It is the design of any product that makes the first impression. It not only defines the product but also gives it an expression.

The Design Trilogy

The concept of ‘designing’ in India took over the initial wave during the Mughal rule. It was they who created timeless monuments with such intricate architecture, leaving the Indian audience awestruck. In fact, it was the Mughals only who birthed the art of carpet designing and weaving in India. Emperor Akbar was a fanatic about art and architecture. He called for Persian artisans who knotted carpets for his royal courts and trained Indian artisans in the process. Persian art mainly features heavy floral motifs, intricate art, and pays attention to minute details. The color scheme chosen for the canvas is either vibrant or very subtle to bring out that vintage appeal. Many of the original rugs of the time still inspire the rug makers today. Yes, Persian designs are one of the dominant patterns that fall in the traditional category; however, any art form that is inspired by a particular region has some cultural references or a heritage story, also falls in the same bucket.

Just like a transition in time, the preference of the market shifted to minimalism. Yes, the art of hand-making rugs will always be a traditional technique, but the designs it can be used to create may not be. Once carpets became a global trade commodity, artisans around the world started working on new designs. The shift in demand of the market birthed the contemporary designs. Minimal, simple, elegant yet statement-making, inspired by the unnoticed elements around us, this category of rugs is indeed one of a kind. Rugs with contemporary designs are often used in interiors with either a very mellow character or to balance the heavy visuals.

The last one of the Trio can be called the best of both worlds. This category comprises designs that have elements of both traditional and contemporary rugs. It can be a minimal design with heavy shades or a Persian pattern in modern hues. Currently in the market, this category is grabbing quite some attention.

Irrespective of the style or pattern, design allows you to utilize every accent the way you wish to. All you have to keep in mind is to maintain visual balance. It is possible that a traditional carpet would look better in the modern home, and a contemporary rug sits calmly in a traditional one. As long as the space looks lively and pleasing, your choice of the design style is a success.
