Sustainable Manufacturing: Our Obeetee Carpets
Every year on June 5th, we come together with the world to celebrate World Environment Day, a day dedicated to promoting awareness and action for the protection of our environment. As we embrace this occasion, it is important for us to recognize and appreciate our efforts as a brand, where we take necessary steps towards ensuring a sustainable future. Adapting to the environmental changes, we, at Our Obeetee Carpets, a 102-year-old brand, understand the need to safeguard the environment and have taken necessary strides towards adopting eco-friendly practices. Let’s delve deeper into our commitment to sustainability and how we have integrated environmental consciousness into our manufacturing operations.
We understand the significance of preserving the planet for future generations. At every step of our manufacturing process, we withhold our part towards environmental sustainability. We actively contribute to minimizing our carbon footprint and reducing waste, while also maintaining a proper wastewater management system. All of this is done while we craft exquisite, luxurious carpets of superior quality.
Here are a few steps we follow at our manufacturing unit in Mirzapur, situated on the banks of the river Ganges, to ensure that there is little to no harm to the environment.
Eco-Friendly Materials
The raw materials at Our Obeetee Carpets are sourced responsibly, with a focus on using eco-friendly and natural fibers such as natural hand-spun wool, unwoven hand-spun linen, BCI cotton, organic cotton, recycled cotton, hemp, and jute. These renewable materials are biodegradable and have minimal impact on the environment compared to synthetic alternatives, thereby reducing our carbon footprint during processing. By opting for natural fibers, we not only manufacture luxurious carpets but also support sustainable farming practices and contribute to the livelihoods of local communities. Even during the design process, we use dyes derived from natural sources, such as indigo for blue, saffron for yellow, and walnut shells for brown. We have also incorporated azo-free dyes for some collections.
Water Conservation
Despite 70% of our planet being water, we recognize its value as a precious resource and take bold steps to conserve it. We have installed an effluent water management system that practices wastewater recycling. The wastewater is channeled into the system via a proper drainage system and then undergoes a 3-step processing. At the primary level, the water is cleaned using lime and alum. At the secondary level, the water is treated with bacteria to remove organic waste, and then it is filtered with sand and carbon filters. After being fit for irrigation at the tertiary level, the water is released in the fields in the surrounding area.
On average, it takes up to 30 buckets of water to wash a carpet. We use a detergent with low concentration, which in turn requires much less water to wash off. Advanced technologies are utilized to treat and recycle water, reducing the stress on local water resources. Our commitment to water conservation symbolizes our dedication to sustainable manufacturing.
Energy Efficiency
As part of our sustainability initiatives, we focus on energy efficiency in our manufacturing facilities. We invest in modern machinery and technologies like solar panels, which contribute to 30% of our energy needs. This helps us save up to 37,666 trees per year due to reduced CO2 emissions. We have also reduced our energy consumption significantly at our dye plant by replacing coal with rice husks to generate energy, saving an additional 74,000 trees per year. Furthermore, we use recycled plastic bottles (5,40,000 per month) to make the 6000 kg of PET yarn necessary for production. Our commitment to using renewable energy and recycled raw materials is a testament to our dedication to ensuring a greener future.
Reducing Waste
In our pursuit of making the environment sustainable, we actively seek ways to minimize waste generation throughout our manufacturing process. One such example is our use of pre-used heated water for dyeing yarns. We also collaborate with local organizations and artisans to repurpose waste materials into new products, reducing our environmental impact and promoting a circular economy.
Our emphasis on using sustainable materials and responsible sourcing ensures that our carpets not only beautify spaces but also minimize ecological impact. By actively promoting recycling and implementing efficient waste management systems, we showcase our dedication to a circular economy. Moreover, our efforts to conserve water and adopt renewable energy sources significantly reduce our carbon footprint. As consumers, we can support companies like ours, encouraging sustainability and making conscious choices to protect our planet for generations to come. So let’s come together and contribute the best we can, just like Our Obeetee Carpets, to ensure a sustainable and greener environment in the future.
